Lost $35 on a rental application and now they have my personal info

I saw a rental property and they had me fill out an online application. It was for a background and credit check. They told me I was approved.
Then they contacted me to set up a time to get the deposit and sign the lease. I replied and left a message, but after that they just stopped talking to me completely. The deposit was supposed to be $700, but they only took the $35 fee.
The problem is they still have all my information from the application. My debit card, my address, and my social security number. It just feels off.
