Mail about business name renewal with a QR code that wasn’t real

I got this letter in the mail saying my Fictitious Business Name was expiring. It had a QR code to scan and renew, so I did what it said. Paid the $169 fee. Thought it was legit.

A few months later I got another letter, but this one was on actual county letterhead. It said my business name was expiring and I needed to go to the county website and pay $40. That’s when I figured out the first letter was a fake.

I just feel stupid for not checking closer. But the first letter looked official enough. Lost $169 over it.
