Home addition contractor took my money and never did any work

This guy came to my house to give me a bid on an addition. We signed a contract and I gave him a check for the general contractor fee, $9600. He kept telling me updates about materials he was ordering and stuff.

When I asked for proof he got weird and said the permits got denied. So I called the permit department myself and they said nobody ever filed anything. No work was ever done. Just be careful.
