Hired a guy to cut a tree down and now he owes me money

I hired this guy Nick to cut a tree down and grind the stump for $1200. On 3/21/26 he came with a few other people and did the job. He didn't stay, but came back later after his workers left and I gave him a check as payment.

At first the work looked done but later I found a lot of debris left behind. I've had yard workers before so that didn't seem too unusual. Then Nick called me and said his bank put a hold on my check and he desperately needed money, asked if I could loan him cash. So I lent him $800 cash. That was a mistake cause he never paid me back.

I tried texting and calling him about doing some more work but he won't answer.
