Job offer with fake check for equipment

I accepted a job with this company, The Hollister Group. A recruiter named Olivia Wesley was my contact. We only communicated through the Teams app. I never actually spoke with her voice to voice, it was all just chat.

She sent me a check to buy equipment I would need for the position. I took it to my bank to deposit it like she said. But when I tried to deposit it the teller said it was a worthless check and could not deposit it. My bank kept the check. I have not lost any money but this whole thing felt strange right from the start.
